Sebastian Faulks ranked #40 in a list of bestsellers of the decade (2000 – 2009) according to Nielsen BookScan. Not sure how much James Bond did to propel him to that rank because Faulks has actually been quite successful over this decade without him. For instance, in 2008 it was reported by Nielsen that Faulks’ most critically acclaimed book, Birdsong, was the #1 must-have in-stock book at a bookseller. Of course this list is UK only, but that’s 3,782,665 books sold or £27.5 million. Not bad at all. So how much of an impact did Bond have? Back in March I dug up information about Pearson PLC (Penguin’s owner, publisher of Devil May Care): it was Penguin UK’s fastest selling fiction hardback for their almost 75-year history and it ranked #3 overall for the year (2008) according to BookScan. As a side note, keep in mind that Devil May Care had a first print run of only 100,000 and the majority of that was sold within a month.

Still curious how Devil May Care did in the United States.

Sebastian Faulks’ hotly anticipated novel A Week in December was published in the UK on September 3rd. I forgot about it to be quite honest, though I shouldn’t have because for the last week or two Faulks has constantly been in the news for stirring up controversy due to comments he made about the Koran.

Anyway fans of Faulks in the US will be able to pick up the novel on October 27th. I look forward to reading it. I’ve read several of his books now and I’ve got nothing but praise for his works thus far.

Not Sebastian Faulks. I don’t think many of us thought he’d come back, but theBookseller got a year-later comment from the author of James Bond’s latest adult adventure Devil May Care:

“My contract did offer me a second go, but definitely not,” he told The Bookseller. “‘Once funny, twice silly, three times a slap’, as the nanny saying goes. But I think it would be a good gig for someone to do.”

Devil May Care wasn’t that bad in my opinion, but it wasn’t anywhere near as good as I thought it should have been. Read some of Faulks’ most celebrated books like Birdsong and so on and you’d see that Faulks in his own style would have been great for the job. But that’s not what happened.

So who is up next? Charlie Higson? Someone new? Nobody knows, but Simon Trewin (Ian Fleming Publication’s literary agent) is quoted in the same article saying “options are open.”

This coming September Hutchinson (aka Random House) will publish Sebastian Faulks’ next novel, A Week in December in the UK. It’ll be published later in October in the US. Here’s the synopsis:

“A Week in December” is Sebastian Faulks’ first wholly contemporary novel. Set in London, it’s a brilliant social satire, structured like a thriller, that takes place over the course of a single week at the end of 2007. It brings together an intriguing cast of characters, each apparently in his or her own world but – as gradually becomes clear – ultimately intricately related. The anti-hero, John Veals, is a shadily successful and boundlessly ambitious Dickensian figure who is trading billions and other characters include a teenage Muslim fanatic, a Polish footballer, a female tube driver, a literary critic, a care worker and a chutney tycoon. As the story builds to its climax, Faulks pulls together powerful ideas about family, money, religion, and the way we live now.

The title is actually quite close to the rejected Young Bond title “Six Days in December”. Instead we got the fan selected title Double or Die.

I guess I had it in my head that they were going to release this on May 28, 2009, which would be the 101st birthday of Ian Fleming. Turns out the US went ahead and published Devil May Care in paperback form on May 19th. You can get it in two different flavors: mass market paperback or a trade edition. Odd they did this because, well, they never do. Not with Bond anyway.

UK folks can probably get Devil May Care on bookshelves now in paperback too. The official release for it is May 28th, but Amazon.co.uk is shipping now and according to the official Penguin007 site, which has gone through another makeover by the way, says it’s out now.

Even in the face of a rough economy, Devil May Care led Penguin to record profits with sales up 7% over 2007.

Hot on the heals of the UK paperback, the US paperback edition of Sebastian Faulks’ first and only James Bond novel, Devil May Care, has been revealed.

Between this and the UK paperback, I gotta go with the UK paperback, but overall I think I’m rather disappointed with both. Anyone else tired of the old cliche of just dropping a beautiful girl on the cover, sometimes with a gun? I like beautiful girls and I like action movies with big explosions and guns and stuff, but yeah, this is tired. If you’re going to do it, at least try and be creative with it. The UK hardcover of Devil May Care was cool in that regard, so were the Fleming UK Centenary editions. I didn’t think the Centenary editions were all that “special” for the Centenary, but they were still neat.

It’s not due until May 2009, but we already have cover art for Sebastian Faulks’ Centenary Bond novel, Devil May Care. The cover appears to be a picture of Tuuli Shipster in a wig who was featured on the UK hardcover.

I’m not really all that much of a fan of this to be honest. That said it is very paperback looking. Reminds me of the early 70s Pan editions or the late 70s / early 80s British Triads with the girl and typically a gun on the cover. I never liked those. Not to say this is the route they should go, but my favorite paperbacks are the early pulp Pan editions – specifically Live and Let Die. Always wished I had a collection of those.

Devil May Care, the bestselling James Bond novel by Sebastian Faulks will hit (trade) paperback form in the United States on May 12, 2009 according to a new listing at Random House. Interestingly, an Amazon page also exists, but seemingly for a Canadian version as the publisher is listed as Anchor Canada instead of either Random House or its imprint Doubleday that published the US hardcover.

Seems rather bizarre to me they didn’t go for May 28th. Anyway, more news as we get it. Thanks to CommandBond.net.

Yesterday, I covered the sales and ranking in the United States. Today, word comes from theBookseller that Devil May Care has chalked up another 27,842 copies in sales in the UK last week. Add this to the initial sale of 44,093 copies in the first 4-days. If you remember, the UK had a first print run of 100,000 meaning that approximately 28,000 first edition, first print copies remain in stores. (I’m guessing, anyway)
