We knew in September that former Bond author Raymond Benson was writing a sequel to his Metal Gear Solid novelization which was released in May of this year. Today comes confirmation from Benson himself that the sequel will be Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. Obviously this makes sense. It’s the second game in the Metal Gear Solid series (though not the Metal Gear series) and was released for the PlayStation 2 in 2001. It was later released as Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance for the Xbox in 2003.

I guess if this is successful Benson could be back for Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PlayStation 2, 2004) and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PlayStation 3, 2008).

According to Raymond the book should be out sometime next autumn.
On the eve of the biggest release in literary Bond history, former 007 novelist Raymond Benson’s latest book goes on sale across the United States. It is a novelization of Metal Gear Solid, which was the third in the popular Metal Gear video game series. Metal Gear got it’s start in 1987 on the NES from acclaimed game designer Hideo Kojima, but the series didn’t really rise to prominence till Metal Gear Solid in 1998 for the PlayStation. Since then 3 canonical sequels have been released with a fourth game, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots due out on June 12th for the PlayStation 3. There have been many other spinoffs and non-canonical releases too.

Prior to this Benson also adapted the first two books in the video games series Splinter Cell for Tom Clancy’s brand. Both books made their way on to the New York Times Top 10 Bestsellers list and Benson’s pseudonym, David Michaels, went on to write two more (thus far) Splinter Cell books and launch another Tom Clancy brand based on an upcoming video game called EndWar.

As much as I play games, I’ve never played Metal Gear Solid (which is probably a crime). Almost played the 2004 remake of it for the GameCube called The Twin Snakes, but never got around to it. Played all the Splinter Cell games though – which obviously means nothing to this post.

Order Metal Gear Solid the novelization from Amazon.com

If you thought the next video game in the popular James Bond series would be showcased at E3, turns out you’re wrong. Both Activision and Vivendi (soon to be merged as Activision Blizzard) will not be attending this year’s E3 according to Kotaku (and here). Other developers and publishers have also stated they won’t be appearing such as id Software. Activision has also withdrawn from the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) citing “business reasons”.

Activision will instead be hosting a “Gamer’s Day” the same week of E3. It’s possible we could see Quantum of Solace then. Maybe. Could be earlier, could be later.

Coming off their victory over HD DVD, Sony is releasing a new PlayStation 3 bundle in Europe with three Blu-ray movies packed-in; the very awesome James Bond film Casino Royale, the very awesome Spartan-kick-ass film 300 and the terrible Spider-Man 3 (face it, it sucked). This bundle includes the 40GB PS3 and will retail for €399 on March 19th. In my opinion, if you’ve got an HDTV and you want a Blu-ray player (keeping in mind they aren’t very cheap), the only way to go in my humble opinion is to just get a PS3. Why not? First off, it’s your best bet considering it’s futureproof for when the Blu-ray Association finally releases Profile 2.0 later this year and you get a PlayStation 3. I’m not even really a Sony fan, in fact it’s the only current-gen system I don’t have, but this is what I’d do. Later on March 29th Sony will release another 40GB PS3 bundle, this time with Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.

In the good ol’ US of A, we’ll be getting an 80GB PS3 bundle with the new DualShock 3 and Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots for $499.

Game Over. For now. Microsoft today came out and definitively told Eurogamer that GoldenEye 007 is not happening for Xbox Live Arcade any time soon due to rights issues. At the very least I’m glad I can stop reporting on this back and forth nonsense. In response to the latest issue of Xbox World 360, which I recently wrote about, Microsoft had this to say:

“Unfortunately, we were never contacted by the publication to confirm information or participate in the story in any way, as we would have confirmed that we do not have the necessary rights to release GoldenEye on Xbox Live Arcade.” – Microsoft Game Studios

There you go folks. Maybe Microsoft should just port Perfect Dark to Xbox Live Arcade instead. Don’t kill me, but as much as I love GoldenEye 007, Perfect Dark pretty much had a superior, albeit obviously similar multiplayer experience, it just came later in the Nintendo 64′s lifetime and didn’t get the love that it should have. Perfect Dark Zero didn’t do it any favors either.

Prediction: Next week rumors start up again.

Well, here we go again folks. It would appear that the magazine “Xbox World 360″ has landed an “exclusive” for their next issue in which they’ll reveal an Xbox 360 title and have hands-on impressions. The issue gets released next Wednesday. Just look for a frenzy of rumors to kick up about the game being GoldenEye. Why? The magazine’s website has been releasing pieces of a screenshot to tease their readers and when you jigsaw them around, it’s clearly a screenshot of GoldenEye on the Dam level, but with prettier graphics. Or so we would think. The picture on the right is what one user has thus far put together.

No one doubts the game was in the works. I have screenshots myself to prove that and have shown one to readers of this blog. It’s a question if it will ever see the light of day. I imagine it will. A deal will be made, the question is when… if it hasn’t already. “I think your odds are improving, Mr. Bond.”

So over at Xbox Evolved they called up Activision on the whole GoldenEye 007 for Xbox Live Arcade deal and apparently Activision let slip some interesting news on Quantum of Solace – the video game currently under development by Treyarch among others.

“We have nothing to do with a Goldeneye 007 game, I would think that is Nintendo and Microsoft’s deal. Our own Bond game however, from Treyarch is powered by the same technology that made Call of Duty 4 and that, along with Treyarch developers Call of Duty 5 is coming along very nicely.”

So, there you go. If true, Quantum of Solace (which is likely the title) is most definitely a first-person shooter. I actually played and beat Call of Duty 4 (PC) last year. One word: Phenomenal. Check out videos and reviews of that title here.

So recently I reported on a rumor that GoldenEye 007 was in the works for Xbox Live Arcade. I didn’t doubt that, but I failed to believe that it was going ahead without Nintendo’s input. Turns out I was correct. In a new post at 1up (the online edition of EGM), GoldenEye 007 was put out of commission because Nintendo and Microsoft couldn’t come to a financial deal. 1up says that the game would have featured the same graphics (though earlier rumors claimed that it would feature higher resolution textures – see picture), would have seen less playable characters due to licensing issues with certain actors, and would have had its multiplayer reworked for online Xbox Live play.

All hope may not be lost as a deal could still be made, though it’s not an easy situation to solve. Nintendo wants it for their Virtual Console, Microsoft wants it for their Arcade, and both regardless of which way the wind blows wants some money out of it.

New rumors posted today indicate that GoldenEye 007 may be in the cards later this year for Xbox Live Arcade. According to Xbox Evolved‘s “reliable sources”, they believe that Microsoft, Rareware, Activision, and MGM Interactive came to an agreement to get this game released “shortly” before Activision’s own Bond 22. Consider me very skeptical because another player, Nintendo, wasn’t even mentioned and they published the game and owned the rights to the Bond license when the game was originally released. Naturally Nintendo is going to want something out of this considering they have a competing “arcade” platform – Virtual Console.

The rumor didn’t end there though. Those same “reliable sources” claim the game will come with new updated graphics and a multiplayer overhaul that will allow for online play over Xbox Live. Additionally, Perfect Dark and the first Banjo-Kazooie game, both developed by Rare are also said to be in the works to be released on Live Arcade too.

Rumors. This isn’t the first time this one has made the rounds. I also seem to recall a similar one, but for Nintendo’s Virtual Console. This probably won’t be the last rumor on the matter either.
